When we want to go somewhere, we need to go there. yes, I realize this sounds super-logical, to the extent that it might be funny or weird for some people. It is strange, however, how many people do not pursue their dreams, do not go there…For some it is just too much trouble. Humans are just too much of procrastinators; let’s face it: it’s way easier to dream up excuses than to actually act! “Oh I don’t make excuses”, you might say, I have my dreams.
OK, stop dreaming, start doing!
That is the only way you are going to get somewhere. To get somewhere we need momentum. I would argue that we do never stand still, we are always moving to or from or goals, we are in constant motion. To get somewhere, you need momentum… forward momentum.
So how do you get forward momentum? Here is five ways I try to maintain forward momentum
1. WRITE YOUR GOALS AND OBJECTIVES DOWN
Strange how writing things down make them so much more concrete. Put this on your wall, in your diary, somewhere you are going to see the goals.
2. DIVIDE AND CONQUER
Once you’ve got the bigger idea down, commit some actions to paper (or computer if you must). Figure out what needs to be done. Write it down and tick it off the list as done when its done. I don’t like electronic tasks lists which removes done items, no, there are something to seeing that you’ve accomplished something – I suppose it psychological…
3. TELL OTHER PEOPLE WHAT YOUR GOALS ARE
This may be a bit dangerous, but there is nothing like a bit of peer pressure to help you along. Thinking “what would X say?” can be a very motivating factor, especially if you care what X says… or a somewhat more subtle way of getting momentum through telling others is:
4. ASK OTHERS FOR HELP
People generally are helpful. Therefore do not try to reach your goals alone, use others, both of motivating factor to help the momentum along, but also to move the work along.
5. DO STUFF – DELIVER
Do not wait till anything is perfect. It’s probably never going to be. Live dangerously, accept that some things are good enough… ask yourself if it will move you along? Figure out what small (and possibly imperfect ) step will move you forward. When last did you see an infant stand up and walk? No, nobody does that, we put ourselves on the line to learn to walk, and we failed many times along the way, but we kept going!
What will you be doing to go towards your goal?
What do you do to help you keep the momentum going? Please leave your ideas in the comments as it might help me in moving towards my goals.
